Biospecimens are human biological materials, such as tissue, blood, or other biofluids, collected for research purposes. These samples, along with their associated clinical data, are the fundamental building blocks for advancing modern medicine.
Biospecimens are essential for a wide range of biomedical research. They are used to discover disease biomarkers, understand pathological mechanisms, develop and validate new drugs and diagnostics (including companion diagnostics), and advance personalized medicine. At iProcess, our samples support every stage, from basic research to complex clinical trials.
Identifiable biospecimens are samples that are linked to personal health information (PHI) that could be used to identify the donor. To protect patient privacy, research biospecimens are de-identified or anonymized. iProcess operates under strict ethical guidelines (including IRB approval and informed consent) to provide fully de-identified samples with relevant clinical data, ensuring both research integrity and patient confidentiality.
While the terms are often used interchangeably, “specimen” is a broad term for any sample used for analysis (e.g., a rock sample, a water sample). A “biospecimen” specifically refers to a biological material taken from a human or animal, such as tissue, blood, or urine, intended for diagnostic or research purposes.
Biospecimen management is the comprehensive process of collecting, processing, storing, tracking, and distributing biological samples. It encompasses everything from protocol development and quality control to data management and logistics. Effective biospecimen management, a core service at iProcess, ensures the quality, integrity, and regulatory compliance of every sample throughout its lifecycle.
The preservative used depends on the intended research application. The most common chemical is formalin, which is used to fix tissue that is then embedded in paraffin wax to create Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded (FFPE) blocks. For preserving nucleic acids and proteins, tissues are often snap-frozen in liquid nitrogen or stored at ultra-low temperatures without chemical preservatives.
